Get Rid of Promises to Complete Past Human Rights Cases, Activists Urge Jokowi-JK

PojokNasional. Vice President Jusuf Kalla (JK) gave a speech at the 2018 International Human Rights Day commemoration at the Komnas HAM office, Jakarta, on Tuesday.
When JK was delivering his remarks, the coalition of civil society demonstrated in front of the National Human Rights Commission office.

They were a combination of activists from the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS), the Jakarta Legal Aid Institute (LBH), the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI), Amnesty International and a number of victims of human rights violations.

The action, which was attended by around 20 activists, demanded that the government of Joko Widodo-Jusuf Kalla complete cases of past gross human rights violations and other human rights violations.

"Until now there are still nine cases based on the results of the pro-justitia investigation of the National Human Rights Commission that still hangs in the Attorney General's Office for a number of reasons, such as insufficient evidence," Deputy Coordinator of KontraS Putri Kanesia said on the sidelines of the action.

He said he was disappointed because before the end of Jokowi-Kalla's government there were no past human rights cases brought to court.
"Even though Jokowi-Kalla promised to complete it since being elected in 2014 and included in the government Nawacita," said Putri.

He also accused Jokowi-JK of only using the issue of resolving past human rights cases into political and imaging commodities to win the support of victims of human rights violations.
Meanwhile, Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission Ahmad Taufan Damanik said he did not question the demonstration. "I convey to the authorities, let them speak out, don't be banned," he said.

Taufan argued that the protest was caused by activists' hopes about the process of resolving past gross human rights violations through legal proceedings that had not been reached.
