Sharia Industry Can Support RI's Economic Growth

PorosNasional. Governor of Bank Indonesia (BI) Perry Warjiyo said he would continue to encourage the development of Islamic economics and finance, both through Bank Indonesia programs and as part of the program of the National Islamic Finance Committee (KNKS). Sharia economic development is believed to be a source of new growth for the Indonesian economy.

"We believe that sharia economic development can be a source of Indonesia's new economic growth, as well as catching up with other countries," Perry said at the JCC, Jakarta, Tuesday.

As the first pillar, sharia economic development will be encouraged through the development of a halal value chain ecosystem. Some goals are devoted to the food, fashion and tourism sectors, supporting a halal lifestyle campaign.

"We will increase the capacity of sharia businesses in Islamic boarding schools through various business linkages between pesantren, including through the development of virtual markets," Perry explained.

On the side of sharia financial market deepening, BI will issue Bank Indonesia Sukuk (SUKBI) as a sharia-traded monetary instrument that strengthens the management of liquidity in Islamic banking and supports the development of long-term sharia financial instruments.

"We also continue to actively participate in encouraging economic financing through sukuk issuance specifically for infrastructure development as well as sharia social and commercial financial integration, such as empowering zakat and productive endowments," he explained.

"In addition, education and campaigns for the development of Islamic finance and halal lifestyles are intensified through the regular implementation of the Sharia Economic Festival (FeSyar) in three regions of Indonesia and the international standard Indonesia Sharia Economic Festival (ISEF)," he said
